Wait at least a few turns before going to war with other factions. Beware though on harder difficulties, you need to rush and loot cities at the beginning to even realistically stand a chance.

You might think that it's a waste to disband those troops as you could use them to expand quickly, but in reality it just results in you being overstretched and unable to build up your heartlands. Even on Medium difficulty, you have trouble being fully productive (Meaning having enough money to always build stuff) until you have a fair sized kingdom that is protected from attack (For example, uniting a chunk of defendable land such as the British Isles, or the peninsulas of Spain and Italy).ĭisband all unneeded troops at the start. Medieval II is a bitch for managing the economy. It wouldve been a lot better if they had used some sort of feudal system but i guess they had made a format through RTW (Yes i know there were 2 games prior to RTW but it was Rome that made the game series what it is today) and stuck with it. I think they made the game that way to represent the cost of keeping a standing army in the field during the medieval times, honestly i think the upkeep is way too low for most troops. The game in general doesn't give you very much income through buildings or trade deals for that matter.

The way merchants work is that there is a set value to each trade item but the further away you are from your capitol the more value it has which makes perfect sense, the top 3 trade items iirc are silk by Byzantium and spices/sugar in the middle east it's been a while so im not exactly sure on the details. It's a little gamey but it allows you to stack up to 20 merchants on the same slot by placing them in the fort.

Well the obvious answer would be don't make so many troops but there are also merchants, a merchant on silk down by Byzantium can bring in 1k a turn each if they've got some points which they gain quickly if they stand down there and hold monopoly on silk, one thing you can do is bring a general down there and build a fort on top of the silk patch and place a mercenary in the fort after your general has made it to prevent anyone from taking it.
